Former President Uhuru Kenyatta lightened the somber mood during the state funeral of the late Raila Odinga with a heartfelt yet humorous tribute that left mourners both emotional and smiling.
Speaking at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, Uhuru described Raila as a loyal friend, political mentor, and a man who always stood for justice and unity.
He reminisced about their close bond, their shared political struggles, and the respect they maintained despite their differences.
However, it was his candid statement that drew laughter across the stadium. He said, “My brother Raila, you have gone ahead of me. I know you are already talking up there, but I am in no hurry to come join you.”
The light-hearted comment broke through the emotional tension, with mourners laughing and applauding in appreciation of Uhuru’s warm and honest delivery.
Many interpreted the moment as a reflection of the deep bond the two leaders shared beyond politics.
Uhuru went on to describe Raila as a statesman who sacrificed his comfort for Kenya’s freedom and democracy. He praised Raila’s resilience, calling him a man who never gave up on the dream of a united nation.
“Raila Odinga was a patriot whose heart beat for Kenya. We may have disagreed at times, but we always respected each other. His vision for justice and equality will live on,” Uhuru said.
His tribute added a rare touch of humanity to the ceremony, reminding Kenyans that even in death, friendship, laughter, and respect can bridge all divides.
