Attempted Murder, Misuse of Firearm and Incitement: Inside Babu Owino’s Court Battles

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has been involved in several high-profile court cases that have repeatedly placed him under intense public scrutiny. 

The legal battles, spanning several years, have touched on serious criminal allegations and political controversies.

One of the most notable cases dates back to January 2020, when Owino was charged with attempted murder following the shooting of DJ Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, at a nightclub in Nairobi’s Kilimani area. Prosecutors alleged that the MP fired a licensed firearm at close range, leaving the DJ partially paralyzed. 

The incident shocked the country and sparked debate over gun ownership and responsibility among leaders.

Although Owino denied any intent to harm, the case went through multiple court processes. 

At one point, he was acquitted of the charge of misuse of a firearm, a decision that later prompted an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions, keeping the matter alive in the courts.

Beyond the nightclub shooting, the MP has also faced allegations of incitement linked to his political activities and public statements. 

These cases further fueled discussions about the limits of political speech and accountability for elected leaders.

Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Babu Owino has maintained his political profile, insisting on his innocence and describing the cases as politically motivated. 

His court battles continue to shape public opinion, raising broader questions about leadership, justice, and responsibility in Kenya’s political landscape.
