Cyrus Jirongo's Family Say He Left Karen For His Home; Wonders How He Got To Naivasha

The family of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has raised serious questions over the circumstances surrounding his death following a fatal road accident, saying the official police account does not match his known travel plans on the night he died.

Police reports indicated that Jirongo was involved in a deadly crash along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to the report, his Mercedes-Benz collided with a passenger bus heading to Busia, leading to fatal injuries.

However, the family says Jirongo was not travelling from Nakuru or heading toward Nairobi as claimed.

Instead, they insist he was returning home to Gigiri from Karen late on Friday night, making the location of the accident difficult to explain.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the family’s spokesperson, Fred Gumo, said

Jirongo left Karen at around 11:30 pm and was expected to arrive at his Gigiri home shortly after.

He questioned how the former legislator ended up near Naivasha, a route far from where he should have been.

“Our concern is simple,” Gumo said.

“He left Karen to go home in Gigiri. That journey does not pass through Naivasha or the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.”

The family says this unexplained deviation raises questions that must be answered through a thorough and transparent investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi to determine the exact cause of death.

Jirongo’s body was transferred there from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, where it was first taken after the crash.

Family members say the post-mortem will be critical in establishing what happened during Jirongo’s final moments.

Meanwhile, close friends who interacted with him hours before his death have also cast doubt on the idea that the crash was a routine road accident.

Former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri revealed that Jirongo spent most of Friday evening with friends at a hotel in Karen.

Among those present was National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

According to Khaniri, the group discussed future plans, including meetings scheduled for the following day.

“He was in good spirits and making plans,” Khaniri said.

“Nothing suggested he was headed for danger.”

Khaniri, who was among those who viewed the body shortly after the accident, said the injuries were severe and troubling.

He described broken legs, a fractured arm, and visible facial injuries, adding that the extent of the damage raised doubts about the nature of the crash.

While acknowledging that road accidents can be fatal, Khaniri said the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death should not be treated casually.

“This is not something that should be brushed aside,” he said. “There are too many unanswered questions.”

The family has now called on police investigators to examine CCTV footage along the routes Jirongo could have used that night.

They believe camera footage could help reconstruct his movements and explain how he ended up far from his expected route.

“There are cameras on major highways,” Gumo said.

“If they are reviewed, they can show where he went, who he was with, and how he ended up where the accident occurred.”

The family insists they are not making accusations but are seeking clarity, truth, and closure.

Cyrus Jirongo was a well-known political figure who served as Lugari MP and remained influential in national politics even after leaving Parliament.

His sudden death has shocked the political class and the wider public. As tributes continue to pour in, the family says justice begins with honest answers.

“We want the truth,” Gumo said.

“Not speculation, not assumptions. Just the truth.”

The family has urged authorities to handle the investigation professionally and transparently, saying Kenyans deserve to know what really happened to the former legislator.
