George Kinyanjui Ng’ang’a, popularly known as Mengo, is one of Kenya’s quiet but successful transport entrepreneurs.
His journey from being a village mechanic in Kakamega County to becoming the owner and biggest shareholder of Climax Coach Transport Company is a story of patience, hard work, and resilience.
Kinyanjui was born and raised in Matunda, Kakamega County. Although details about his age and formal education are not publicly known, his early life was shaped by hands-on work.
As a young man, he worked as a mechanic in Matunda town, repairing vehicles and learning how engines and spare parts worked. This experience would later play a key role in his success in the transport business.
After working as a mechanic for some time, Kinyanjui opened an auto spare parts shop in Matunda.
The business gave him steady income and helped him understand vehicle maintenance costs, a skill many transport investors lack.
In the late 1990s, Kinyanjui entered the matatu business. He bought his first vehicle, a white Peugeot 504 matatu, which he registered and named Ronaldo.
Encouraged by its performance, he added more vehicles over time. Some of the matatus he owned included Tisho, Kipembe, Komesha, and Covenant, which mainly operated along the Eldoret–Kitale route.
However, the journey was not smooth. Following the 2008 post-election violence, business became difficult. Due to insecurity and economic uncertainty, Kinyanjui made a bold decision to sell all his vehicles.
He then invested in retail business by opening Climax Supermarket in Matunda market. While the supermarket did well initially, his passion for transport never faded.
After some time, Kinyanjui closed the supermarket and focused fully on his long-time dream — starting a bus company. That dream became Climax Coach Transport Company.
From a small beginning, Climax Coach grew steadily. Today, the company is among the largest transport firms serving western Kenya. It boasts a fleet of over 100 modern buses, connecting Nairobi to towns across Western, Nyanza, and Rift Valley regions.
Some of the most popular routes served by Climax Coach include Nairobi–Busia, Nairobi–Kisii, Nairobi–Migori, and Nairobi–Kitale.
Apart from passenger transport, the company also offers parcel delivery services, making it a trusted brand for travelers and traders.
Kinyanjui remains the largest shareholder in the company, while Beatrice Kambo is listed as a minority shareholder.
Climax Coach has also made headlines in recent days following a tragic road accident involving one of its buses and a vehicle linked to former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.
The bus driver, Tiras Kamau Githinji, later explained that the accident occurred when a car exited a petrol station and joined the highway without giving way.
The incident sparked national attention and renewed calls for road safety.
Despite challenges, George Kinyanjui’s story continues to inspire many young Kenyans. His rise from a village mechanic to a major transport investor shows that success can come from humble beginnings, patience, and smart decisions.
Today, Climax Coach stands as a symbol of determination and local entrepreneurship in Kenya’s transport industry.
