Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has stirred fresh political debate after accusing President William Ruto of pursuing a strategy aimed at weakening the Orange Democratic Movement and reshaping Kenya’s coalition politics to his advantage.
According to Amisi, the President is deliberately avoiding any political arrangement that would place conditions on his leadership, especially demands linked to the deputy president position.
He argues that Ruto prefers a political environment where he holds full control, free from coalition pressure or power-sharing expectations.
Amisi claims that this approach explains the sustained political pressure on ODM. In his view, the ruling side sees ODM not just as an opposition party, but as the main obstacle to the creation of a dominant single-party system.
By weakening ODM, the President would reduce resistance and consolidate power within his own political camp.
The Saboti MP suggests that coalition politics, as traditionally practiced in Kenya, are being quietly abandoned.
He believes the current leadership is uncomfortable with coalitions that come with negotiated positions and shared authority.
Instead, the goal is to attract individuals rather than strong parties, making it easier to manage loyalty and discipline.
Amisi further argues that this strategy allows the President to retain flexibility over key decisions, including the choice of a deputy president.
Without a strong coalition partner, such a decision would be based purely on political convenience and timing rather than pre-election agreements.
