The family of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo has raised serious questions about the police account of his death in a road crash early Saturday morning, December 13, 2025.
According to police, Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz collided with a Busia-bound passenger bus along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
However, the family insists he was returning home to Gigiri from Karen, raising doubts about how he ended up so far from his expected route.
Family spokesperson Fred Gumo explained that the former MP had left Karen late Friday night, around 11:30 pm, after spending time with friends and political colleagues.
“He was heading home, yet he was found dead near Naivasha,” Gumo said.
“This raises questions because his home is in Gigiri, and he should have reached there much earlier.”
The body of the late MP is currently at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, where an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The family is eager for answers and is calling for a thorough investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage along the route, to understand how the tragic accident occurred.
Former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri shared that Jirongo had spent much of Friday evening at a Karen hotel with friends, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
They discussed various matters, including planning meetings for the following day. “When I arrived, I saw Jirongo seated with Wetang’ula and two other gentlemen. We were to have a lunch meeting on Saturday, which never happened,” Khaniri recounted.
Khaniri also described the severity of Jirongo’s injuries, indicating that the accident alone seemed unusually fatal.
“Both his legs were completely broken at the ankles, and one hand was also broken. There were minor scratches on his face, but nothing that alone could have caused death. This is why the family is calling for clarity and a proper investigation,” he added.
The discrepancy between the police account and the family’s statement has fueled speculation, with some suggesting foul play cannot be ruled out. The family is urging the authorities to conduct a full reconstruction of Jirongo’s final movements.
“He was supposed to travel from Karen to Gigiri, not along Nakuru–Nairobi Highway. CCTV footage along the highway can show the route he took and help answer these questions,” Gumo said.
Local leaders and community members have expressed solidarity with the family, emphasizing the need for transparency.
“Cyrus Jirongo was a veteran politician and public servant. The nation deserves answers about the circumstances of his death,” a community member commented.
Police have yet to issue an updated statement addressing the family’s concerns.
Meanwhile, the autopsy at Lee Funeral Home is expected to provide more information on the exact cause of death. Until then, the mystery surrounding the accident continues to stir public attention and concern.
