Ministry of Education Releases Grade 10 Placements

The Ministry of Education has released the Grade 10 placements for students who sat the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) 2025.

This marks a key step for the pioneer cohort under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, helping students transition from junior secondary to senior secondary schools.

Parents can check where their children have been placed by sending the learner's KNEC assessment number via SMS to 22263 or by visiting the ministry’s portal at education.go.ke. Students are expected to report to their respective schools by Monday, January 12, 2026.

How Placements Were Determined

The Ministry emphasized that placements were fully automated to ensure fairness. The process considered multiple factors, including:

Learners’ choices of schools

Performance in the KJSEA exams

Psychometric test results

Equity considerations for students across regions

The Ministry also noted that top-performing students in the STEM, social science, and arts tracks will be given priority placement in boarding schools of their choice.

The 2025 KJSEA exams were held between October 27 and November 3, 2025, and assessed the readiness of students under the new CBE curriculum.

A total of 1,130,459 learners sat the exam, with 578,630 boys and 551,829 girls participating.

The Ministry previously released the examination results on Thursday, December 11, 2025, giving parents and students an opportunity to review their performance before placement.

Parents who wish to change their child’s school can submit a request through the head of the junior school. Requests must be made at least two weeks before the reporting date.

Before a transfer is approved, senior schools are required to declare available vacancies through their county directors of education. The replacement process will only happen once and is irreversible once completed.

Once a transfer is approved, the Ministry will issue joining instructions online. The Ministry stressed that schools cannot issue printed letters for replacement cases. This measure ensures the process is fair and transparent.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted the importance of a smooth transition for students, noting that officers involved must ensure a credible and transparent placement process.

He encouraged parents to cooperate fully and monitor their children’s transition from junior to senior secondary schools.

The Ministry also urged students to be proactive in preparing for senior school life, reminding them that the right placement will help them pursue their career paths in the future.

The 2025 KJSEA Grade 10 placement is a milestone for Kenya’s education system as it strengthens the CBE model.

With over a million students involved, the Ministry aims to maintain fairness, inclusivity, and transparency, ensuring all learners have a chance to succeed.
