The images reveal the severity of the accident that occurred along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Jirongo died after his white Mercedes sedan was involved in a head-on collision with a long-distance passenger bus operated by Climax Coach.
The accident happened shortly after he had exited a petrol station, according to an account given by the bus driver.
Speaking after the crash, the driver explained that he was travelling from Nairobi toward western Kenya when the incident occurred.
He said Jirongo’s vehicle suddenly joined the highway and moved into the bus’s lane while attempting to merge back onto the road.
“I tried to avoid it, but there was very little time. The impact was unavoidable.”
The driver added that he did not immediately know who was inside the Mercedes. It was only after police officers arrived at the scene that he learned the vehicle belonged to Cyrus Jirongo.
He expressed deep sympathy to the family, saying the incident was tragic and heartbreaking.
Images taken after the accident show the Mercedes E-Class sustained massive damage, especially at the front.
The bonnet was completely crushed, the engine caved in, and the front wheels were flattened. The windscreen shattered into pieces, indicating the force of the collision.
Most of the damage was concentrated on the driver’s side, where Jirongo was seated. This heavy impact is believed to have caused fatal injuries, despite the car being fitted with modern safety systems.
The number plate was partially damaged and barely visible in some of the photos circulating online.
Automotive experts note that the Mercedes model Jirongo was driving is equipped with several advanced safety features.
These include active brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, pre-collision warning systems, multiple airbags, including a driver knee airbag, and electronic stability control.
However, road safety experts explain that no vehicle, regardless of how advanced, can fully protect occupants in a high-speed head-on collision involving a heavy commercial bus.
As news of his death spread, scenes of grief were reported at Jirongo’s rural home in Lumakanda.
Videos shared on social media showed family members, friends, and locals gathering at his compound, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The large homestead, surrounded by trees and well-kept buildings, was filled with mourners.
Cyrus Jirongo was a well-known political figure, businessman, and former Cabinet minister. Over the years, he remained influential in national politics and public discourse, making his death a major blow to many Kenyans.
Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders, friends, and members of the public, many describing him as bold, outspoken, and deeply invested in national issues.
