Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has fired a strong response to Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna following remarks Sifuna made during the burial of former MP Cyrus Jirongo.
Sifuna had criticised some Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders for aligning themselves with President William Ruto’s administration under the broad-based government, arguing that the party has no meaningful working relationship with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and accusing some members of back-door engagement to benefit politically.
In defending the government’s engagement, Mbadi dismissed Sifuna’s position, telling him he is “lucky” to benefit from what he described as double-bet politics — implicitly suggesting Sifuna criticises the government while enjoying political stability created by broader cooperation.
Mbadi urged a shift of focus towards economic empowerment rather than endless opposition, stating that the Luo community and other groups have already played a significant role in Kenya’s political liberation and should now prioritise development and prosperity over continued political contestation.
Mbadi’s message reflects growing tensions within ODM over the direction of the party ahead of the 2027 elections, especially regarding how to handle relations with President Ruto’s government and whether to contest or cooperate on key issues.
The exchanges underscore internal debate in ODM about its political strategy, identity, and leadership, with divisions emerging between those favouring engagement with government and others advocating an oppositional stance.
