New details have emerged surrounding the mysterious death of the late Cyrus Jirongo after investigators obtained and reviewed CCTV footage from a petrol station along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
The footage, now at the center of ongoing investigations, has raised fresh questions about what exactly happened in the final minutes before the deadly crash.
According to the analyzed video, Jirongo’s last known movements were captured at Eagle’s petrol station in the early hours of the morning.
Notably, the vehicle did not signal as it turned in. Instead of stopping to refuel, the car slowly drove past the fuel pumps. This unusual behavior immediately stood out to investigators.
After spending only 34 seconds within the station, the driver made a sudden U-turn and exited, rejoining the highway towards Nairobi at around 2:19 a.m.
What followed moments later has deepened the mystery.
At approximately 2:19:25 a.m., CCTV cameras captured a bus speeding along the same highway from the Nairobi side. The bus appeared to be moving at a very high speed, with its headlights on full beam. Seconds later, the tragic impact occurred.
The bus slammed into the Mercedes-Benz with immense force, dragging it for an estimated 25 meters along the road.
The collision caused the luxury car to spin violently before coming to a stop on the side of the highway. The damage suggested a powerful and sudden impact, leaving little chance for survival.
Just one minute after the crash, at around 2:20 a.m., another vehicle passed the scene. Its headlights briefly illuminated the wreckage, revealing smoke rising from Jirongo’s car as it lay motionless by the roadside.
Detectives are now carefully reconstructing Girongo’s final moments. Key questions remain unanswered: What was his state of mind at the petrol station? Why did he enter but not stop? Was he alone in the vehicle at the time? Investigators believe the petrol station footage could provide critical clues as they seek to understand the circumstances leading to the fatal crash.
