Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed regret over not having met Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua earlier, before Gachagua’s now-famous meeting with President William Ruto.
Speaking during an interview with local media, Kalonzo said, “I wish I had met Gachagua before he met President Ruto. It could have changed the course of certain discussions and perhaps opened room for more collaboration.”
The comments come amid a backdrop of political realignments as Kenya gears up for the 2027 general elections. Analysts say Kalonzo’s reflection hints at ongoing negotiations and strategic considerations among opposition leaders ahead of the polls.
Gachagua, who has remained a key ally of President Ruto, met the head of state recently in what many interpreted as a show of continued loyalty and alignment within the ruling coalition. Kalonzo’s remarks suggest that opposition parties are keenly observing these interactions, seeking avenues to strengthen their own positions.
Political observers note that Kalonzo’s Wiper Party has been attempting to consolidate support among regions where Gachagua holds influence, including central Kenya and parts of the coastal region.
While the former vice president did not give specific details of what he would have discussed with Gachagua, insiders say the focus would likely have included coalition-building and policy alignment.
The statement has sparked debates online, with some calling it a diplomatic acknowledgment of missed opportunity, while others interpret it as a subtle critique of the current political alliances.
As Kenya approaches a crucial election period, such reflections from senior leaders are expected to influence campaign narratives and voter perceptions, particularly in areas where key political figures hold sway.
