BREAKING NEWS: Former Cabinet Minister Dies in Early Morning Crash

Former Cabinet Minister and long-serving Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, has died following a road accident that occurred early Saturday morning, dealing a major blow to Kenya’s political class.

Information reaching this publication indicates that Jirongo was travelling along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway when the accident occurred in the Karai area of Naivasha at around 3:00 a.m.

He was reportedly heading back to his home in Lugari after a late-night journey. Sadly, he did not survive the crash.

Traffic police in the Rift Valley region confirmed the incident, noting that investigations are underway to establish the cause of the accident.

Other people involved were rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel on major highways.

Jirongo, who was 64 years old at the time of his death, was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for over two decades.

He served as Minister for Rural Development during the final phase of the late President Daniel arap Moi’s administration in 2002.

His appointment to Cabinet came after years of loyalty and active involvement in national politics.

He first entered Parliament in 1997 after winning the Lugari parliamentary seat.

He served one term before losing in 2002 but later made a political comeback in 2007, reclaiming the seat and serving until 2013.

During his time in Parliament, Jirongo was known for his bold opinions, political mobilization skills, and strong influence in Western Kenya.

In 2017, Jirongo took a bold step by contesting the presidency under the United Democratic Party (UDP).

Although his bid did not succeed, the move highlighted his ambition and desire to contribute to national leadership at the highest level.

His political journey continued in 2022 when he vied for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat.

Despite an energetic campaign, he lost the race to ODM’s Fernandes Barasa. Following the loss, Jirongo kept a relatively low profile but remained active in grassroots politics.

Just weeks before his death, he openly supported a candidate during the Malava by-elections and participated in campaign activities, showing that his interest in public affairs had not faded.

Messages of condolence have poured in from leaders across the political divide, trade unions, and members of the public.

Many have described him as a fearless politician, a skilled mobiliser, and a leader who played a role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.

Cyrus Jirongo will be remembered for his long service, political courage, and lasting impact on national and regional politics.

His family is expected to announce burial arrangements in the coming days.
