“We had visited a hotel and were enjoying a swim. Caylon was with his mother, and they were having a wonderful bonding time. He was wearing a life jacket at the time,” Mukanda said.
After swimming, Caylon reportedly grew hungry and asked for food. The family decided to leave the pool and order meals. According to Mukanda, the young boy followed a waiter to the restaurant where the food was being prepared.

“When the waiter brought the food, Caylon was not with him. He claimed that the boy had left him behind while bringing the food. We immediately started searching for him,” she explained.
It was during the search that the family discovered Caylon submerged at the deep end of the pool. His mother rushed into the water to rescue him and attempted resuscitation on the spot. Efforts to press his belly and expel water proved unsuccessful.

A boda boda was then used to rush him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Mukanda revealed that he had likely been deceased for some time before reaching medical care.
The family expressed frustration over the hotel management, noting that there appeared to be no immediate action taken following the incident.

“No one was swimming when we found him. No one stopped to help, and the management continued with business as usual. The music was still playing, and it was as though nothing had happened,” she lamented.
Mukanda further revealed a disturbing pattern at the hotel. She claimed that similar tragedies have occurred in previous years, particularly during the month of December, and little has been done to prevent them.

“Caylon was the only son among my sister’s four children. His loss has left a huge void in our family,” she said, visibly emotional.
Since the incident, Caylon’s mother has reportedly fallen into depression, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of her child.

This tragic event in Busia echoes a similar drowning incident in Syokimau, Machakos County, where a Grade Six pupil, Jael Nabalayo, also drowned in a swimming pool.
Her family similarly appealed for justice after CCTV footage captured the girl’s final moments.
