CCTV Footage Shows Moment Cyrus Jirongo's Car Entered Fuel Station, Crashed with Speeding Climax Bus

Naivasha, Kenya – CCTV footage from Eagol petrol station in Karai, Naivasha, has revealed the shocking sequence of events that led to the death of former MP Cyrus Jirongo. 

The Mercedes Benz he was driving was involved in a collision with a Climax Coaches bus along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, leaving him dead at the scene.

According to the footage, Jirongo’s car entered the petrol station at 2:18:43 PM, coming from Nairobi. Rather than stopping at the pumps to refuel, the vehicle drove past them and attempted to rejoin the highway. 

In what appears to be an effort to merge back into the correct lane, the Mercedes entered oncoming traffic without signaling, positioning itself dangerously in the path of oncoming vehicles.

Within seconds, a Climax Coaches bus, traveling at high speed, collided with the car. The impact caused the Mercedes to spin, brake lights flashing as it was dragged approximately 25 metres along the tarmac. 

Smoke billowed from the car, suggesting severe damage, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away. The scene, captured in real-time by the station’s surveillance cameras, left no doubt about the suddenness and severity of the crash.

Peter Kamau, a local resident and one of the first responders, recounted the chaotic moments after the collision. 

“I live just a few metres from the highway. When I heard the loud bang, I rushed outside with nine others to help. We tried to open the car doors but they were jammed, so we had to break them using an axe,” he said. 

Kamau, a motorcycle mechanic, added that Jirongo was alone in the vehicle and appeared slumped over the steering wheel, showing no signs of life.

Inside the Mercedes, responders found a half-finished bottle of alcohol and a packet of cigarettes, indicating the victim might have been consuming substances prior to the accident. 

Meanwhile, bus passengers, who numbered over 40, remained at the scene for roughly ten minutes, some recording videos or taking photos, before being transferred to another vehicle to continue their journey.

Traffic police later arrived to cordon off the accident site and collect evidence. Both vehicles were eventually towed to the station for further investigation. 

No inventory of the car’s contents was officially recorded, as this task typically falls under the first responder’s discretion. 

Despite the tragedy, operations at the Climax Coaches yard in Elementaita continued normally, with buses arriving to refuel and ferry passengers.

The Karai area of Naivasha is notorious as a highway blackspot, with frequent accidents attributed to high traffic volume and speeding vehicles. 

First responders and local residents often deal with severe crashes, but the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death have sparked discussions about road safety and driver behavior on major highways.

Cyrus Jirongo, a well-known political figure in Kenya, died instantly as a result of the collision. The exact sequence leading to the crash, including why the car entered oncoming traffic, remains under investigation. Authorities have urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially in accident-prone zones like Karai.
