IEBC Sets Dates for 2026 By-Elections Across Four Constituencies

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially announced that the remaining four by-elections in Kenya will be held on February 26, 2026.

The announcement was made public through a gazette notice on December 19, 2025, and it outlines key directives for political parties, independent candidates, and public officers intending to participate.

The by-elections will fill vacancies in the following areas: the Member of National Assembly for Isiolo South Constituency, the Member of County Assembly for Muminji Ward and Evurore Ward in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County, and West Kabras Ward in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County.

IEBC has issued clear deadlines for political parties aiming to field candidates. Parties are required to submit names of candidates contesting in party primaries, as well as the dates of these primaries, by January 2, 2026.

Independent candidates are also required to submit their names and electoral symbols by the same date. Additionally, newly registered political parties or those that have revised their membership lists must submit certified copies of these lists by January 2.

To ensure accountability, the Commission has further directed that each political party intending to participate must provide the names and specimen signatures of authorized officials by January 13, 2026.

Public officers planning to contest must resign from office within seven days of the vacancy declaration to avoid conflicts of interest.

Political parties intending to use indirect nominations are required to submit their list of nominees by January 16, 2026.

The formal nomination of all candidates is scheduled for January 22 and 23, 2026, marking the official start of the electoral process.

The campaign period will commence immediately after nominations, running from January 22 to February 23, 2026, ending 48 hours before polling day.

The IEBC also clarified that disputes related to candidate nominations must be lodged within 24 hours of the dispute or no later than January 26, 2026.

In preparation for the by-elections, the IEBC has been working closely with local civil society organizations and community groups to ensure a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process.

The Commission has emphasized the importance of compliance with all rules and deadlines, particularly in preventing delays and ensuring fairness for all candidates and voters.
