New details have emerged about the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, revealing that he had plans to vie for the Nairobi governor seat in the 2027 General Election.
This revelation comes as questions continue to arise over the circumstances surrounding his sudden death in a road accident.
Jirongo died on Saturday, December 13, after his vehicle was involved in a crash with a Climax Coaches bus in the Karai area of Naivasha.
The tragic accident happened only hours after he attended a meeting in Karen with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. His death shocked many Kenyans and brought his political journey to an abrupt end.
Speaking after the incident, Jirongo’s close ally, Calistus Wafula, raised concerns over the behavior of witnesses who were in the bus involved in the accident.
Wafula questioned why the passengers left the scene without recording statements with the police. He said it was strange for people, especially those travelling to Busia, to leave without explaining what they saw.
Wafula described Jirongo as a strong man of faith who remained calm even when faced with danger. He said Jirongo trusted in God and believed no human being could take his life.
According to him, Jirongo often drove himself and never panicked easily. Wafula dismissed the initial police findings and called on authorities to conduct thorough investigations.
He insisted that the driver of the Climax bus should be arrested so that the family can receive a clear and truthful report on what really happened.
On the political front, Wafula revealed that Jirongo’s United Democratic Party had planned to endorse him for the Nairobi gubernatorial race in 2027.
He said party officials believed Nairobi needed strong and serious leadership and felt Jirongo was the right person for the job. They had planned to meet and persuade him to accept the challenge after December 12.
Wafula also spoke about Jirongo’s position on national politics. He said Jirongo did not oppose the government but also refused to support it blindly.
Although President William Ruto’s administration had reached out to him, Jirongo declined to work with a government he felt was not performing well.
