The sudden death of former Lugari MP and cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo has left many Kenyans in shock. Jirongo, known for openly practicing polygamy, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025, in a road accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
His luxury Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a bus, tragically ending the life of the popular politician.
After the accident, Jirongo’s body was taken to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, where family, friends, and supporters gathered to pay their last respects.
The family bore the heaviest burden of grief, especially his three wives, who made their first public appearance since his passing.
On Sunday, December 14, mourners visited Jirongo’s home, where the three wives welcomed them. Christine, one of the wives, spoke to the guests, saying, “We are all in shock and still processing the information. We are speechless.
Thank you all for standing with us.” She also asked for more clarity regarding the circumstances of her husband’s death.
Anne Kanini, another wife, thanked the visitors for their support during this difficult time, while the third wife, Ann, shared her grief and remembered the love Jirongo showed to his family.
She said, “The loss is heavy, but we feel comforted by the love he gave us. We are grateful for your support, which makes this time a little easier.”
Cyrus Jirongo had openly embraced polygamy throughout his life. Earlier this year, during the burial of his daughter Lorraine Jelagat, he admitted that he had four wives.
He had separated from Lorraine’s mother, Caroline, and jokingly blamed himself for the split, saying it was because of his wandering eyes.
The public display of mourning by the three wives touched many Kenyans on social media.
Tributes poured in, with followers remembering Jirongo’s contributions to politics and society. Messages of comfort and prayers for strength for the widows were shared widely online.
Jirongo’s family has also raised questions about the official account of the crash.
They claimed that he was returning to Gigiri after leaving Karen late on Friday night, December 12, which differs from police reports stating he was heading towards Nairobi.
Family spokesperson Fred Gumo called for clarity on what really happened before the fatal accident.
Cyrus Jirongo leaves behind a large family and a political legacy.
His wives, mourning publicly, have shown strength and unity in this time of grief, as friends, supporters, and Kenyans continue to honor the memory of the late politician.
