The death of former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo continues to raise political and public concern, with opposition leaders now demanding clear answers from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula over his final meeting with the late politician hours before his death.
The opposition leaders raised the issue after visiting Jirongo’s Nairobi home to condole with his family.
Led by Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, the leaders said Kenyans deserve a full account of who was with Jirongo, where he was headed, and what transpired before the fatal crash. Gachagua openly questioned the lack of public explanations from people close to Jirongo on that night.
He said many Kenyans are asking difficult but necessary questions, especially about why those who last interacted with Jirongo have not come forward to clarify events. According to Gachagua, the silence has only fueled suspicion and speculation, making it harder for the public to accept the official accident narrative.
The opposition further argued that Speaker Wetang’ula, being one of the last senior leaders to meet Jirongo, should provide a detailed account of their interaction. They insisted this was not about blame, but about transparency and accountability in a case involving a prominent national figure.
Wetang’ula has since explained that he met Jirongo on the evening following Jamhuri Day celebrations. He said the meeting lasted about an hour, after which he excused himself to rest ahead of a planned trip the next day. According to the Speaker, he later learned of Jirongo’s death the following morning through messages on his phone.
Despite this explanation, opposition leaders maintain that more clarity is needed, especially regarding Jirongo’s movements after the meeting. They argue that conflicting timelines and unanswered questions have created doubts that can only be resolved through a thorough and independent investigation.
The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of December 13 along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, where Jirongo’s car collided head-on with a passenger bus.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the crash happened that night, but investigations are still ongoing.
Opposition leaders have urged President William Ruto to instruct the DCI to fast-track the investigation and ensure all facts are made public. They specifically called for statements from passengers who were on the bus involved in the crash, saying their accounts are crucial in establishing what truly happened.
Some leaders also expressed concern over social media claims suggesting possible interference at the crash scene, though authorities have not confirmed these claims. They stressed that only a transparent investigation, supported by forensic evidence and witness testimonies, can restore public confidence.
Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka described Jirongo as a courageous and outspoken leader, saying his family and the nation deserve clear answers. He called for an independent probe that leaves no room for doubt or political influence.
Investigators are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage and recording statements from people Jirongo interacted with before the accident. This includes individuals he met at social venues earlier that night.
Preliminary footage is said to show Jirongo stopping at a petrol station shortly before the crash, after which he drove back toward Nairobi.
Cyrus Jirongo, aged 64, was a well-known political figure who rose to national prominence in the early 1990s. He played a major role in Kenya’s multiparty politics and later became an influential businessman. His life and career attracted both admiration and controversy.
