New details have emerged shedding light on the final minutes of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo before he died in a fatal road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
An eyewitness account from a fuel station attendant has helped piece together a clearer timeline of events leading up to the tragic crash.
According to the account published by Sunday Nation, Jirongo arrived at Eagle Petrol Station in Karai, Naivasha, at around 2:15 am on Saturday.
He was driving alone in a white Mercedes-Benz and appeared calm as he entered the station. The former MP reportedly steered his vehicle toward a fuel pump but did not refuel.
Instead, witnesses say Jirongo abruptly turned his car around and exited the station, rejoining the highway. It was at this moment that a critical error is believed to have occurred.
The eyewitness recalled that Jirongo drove back onto the highway using the wrong lane, entering a section reserved for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
Moments later, a loud crash shattered the silence of the early morning. Jirongo’s car collided head-on with a bus travelling from Nairobi toward Nakuru.
The impact was severe, forcing both vehicles several metres from the point of collision.
The fuel station attendant rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the crash. He attempted to open the Mercedes-Benz but found the doors locked.
When he looked inside, he saw Jirongo slumped over the steering wheel with visible head injuries and blood stains.
Despite attempts to assist, the former MP was unresponsive.
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 2:37 am. Other motorists later stopped to help, but there was little that could be done.
Police officers arrived and secured the scene, while the wreckage was later towed to Naivasha Police Station for inspection.
Authorities confirmed that Jirongo’s body was initially taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, with traffic officers and detectives reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
The eyewitness account has provided the clearest reconstruction so far of Jirongo’s final movements, highlighting how a brief stop and a wrong turn may have led to a devastating outcome.
