A sombre mood has engulfed the village home of former Cabinet Minister and Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo in Mbaya village, Lumakanda, following his sudden death in a grisly road accident.
Relatives, supporters, and neighbours have been arriving in waves, struggling to come to terms with the shocking loss.
The atmosphere around Jirongo’s family home is heavy with grief. Friends and family gathered to share memories, offer condolences, and provide comfort to one another.
Many could be seen shedding tears while others silently reflected on the life of the controversial yet influential politician.
According to eyewitnesses, Jirongo was involved in a head-on collision along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in the Karai area of Naivasha.
His vehicle reportedly rammed into a 45-seater passenger bus, resulting in his instant death.
The tragic accident has left the community and the nation in mourning.
Jirongo, who was 64 years old, had a long career in Kenyan politics and public service.
He served as Minister for Rural Development during the final months of former President Daniel arap Moi’s administration and was elected Lugari MP in two separate terms.
His political journey also included bids for the presidency and the Kakamega gubernatorial seat.
Since news of his death broke, tributes have poured in from politicians, business leaders, and the general public.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka described him as one of the region’s greatest sons, while COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli called him an asset to the community and the nation.
