ODM Faces Shakeup As Cherargei Claims Sifuna Will Be Removed From Party And Senate Roles

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has claimed that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will lose his position as ODM Secretary-General and Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate this week.

He said Sifuna’s alignment with the opposition makes him untrustworthy.

Cherargei accused Sifuna of voting for the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024 and later changing sides.

He described Sifuna as deceitful and a master of political hypocrisy, citing the Senate Hansard as evidence.

Cherargei said that ODM will remove Sifuna as Secretary-General while the Senate will strip him of the deputy whip role.

He claimed Sifuna will be free to join opponents of the Broad-Based Government arrangement.

However, ODM Communications Director Philip Etale denied any plans to oust Sifuna. He told Kenyans.co.ke that the party is not considering removing him from his roles.

Sifuna has faced criticism within ODM over his opposition to the Broad-Based arrangement.

Some party members argue he has undermined ODM by raising doubts about internal deals and party funding during the 2022 elections.

The party youth league, led by Kasmuel McOure, described Sifuna as unfit for the Secretary-General role.

McOure said Sifuna should focus on helping Nairobi residents rather than clashing with other ODM members.

Sifuna has also publicly criticized Suna East MP Junet Mohamed over the handling of election funds in 2022.

He accused Junet of benefiting from former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s support while leaving ODM exposed during the campaign.

Junet denied the claims and accused Sifuna of working secretly for Uhuru Kenyatta. He said the former president released funds meant for election agents through his relative Muhoho Kenyatta.

The feud has intensified debates within ODM over loyalty, leadership, and management of party resources.

Sifuna’s critics argue his actions have weakened the party, while his supporters say he is holding leaders accountable.

With tensions rising, the question of Sifuna’s future in ODM remains uncertain.

Party members and political observers are closely watching for decisions on his leadership and Senate roles this week.
