A touching video of an elderly grandmother from Bunyala, Busia County, has deeply moved Kenyans after she was recorded appealing for help to enable her granddaughter continue her education at Rangala Girls High School.
The emotional clip, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the grandmother explaining her painful life story while asking leaders and well-wishers to help her clear school fees for the bright student.
The grandmother, identified as Rosemary Ojulo, says she is raising her granddaughter alone after losing almost all her close family members.
According to Rosemary, her children died one after another, and later her grandchildren’s parents also passed away, leaving her with the heavy responsibility of caring for the young girl.
Due to her old age and lack of income, she says she is unable to meet basic needs, including school fees.
In the video, Rosemary explains that her granddaughter is a hardworking student who recently posted good results at Rangala Girls High School.
She says the girl’s strong academic performance has given her hope that education could change her life and help break the cycle of poverty that has affected the family for many years.
What has left many viewers emotional is the condition of the family’s homestead.
As the video is recorded, several graves are seen within the compound, silently reminding viewers of the many deaths that have occurred in the family.
The sight of the graves, combined with the grandmother’s emotional plea, has broken the hearts of many Kenyans online.
During the appeal, Rosemary calls on the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Katarina Omanyo, as well as other leaders and kind-hearted Kenyans, to come to her aid.
She says she is not asking for much, only support to ensure her granddaughter stays in school and completes her education.
Since the video emerged, social media users have expressed sympathy and concern, with many praising the grandmother’s courage and love for her granddaughter.
Some Kenyans have urged leaders in Busia County to respond quickly, while others have called for the girl to be sponsored by well-wishers or education foundations.
