In addition, statements will be taken from passengers who were on board the Climax bus, as well as other witnesses who may have seen the crash.
Forensic experts are expected to revisit the scene to analyze skid marks, vehicle damage, road conditions, speed estimates, and impact angles.
Once investigations are complete, the DCI says a full police file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal review and further direction.
In its statement, the DCI conveyed condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late Cyrus Jirongo. The agency also assured the public that the investigation will be handled professionally and without bias.
“The DCI remains committed to carrying out thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in line with the Constitution and the rule of law,” the statement said.
Cyrus Jirongo was a well-known political figure whose death has sparked national attention and renewed discussions around road safety, especially during night travel on major highways.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned the driver of a Climax Company bus that was involved in a tragic road accident which claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo.
The accident happened in the early hours of December 13, 2025, along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway near the Karai area. According to investigators, the crash occurred at around 2:19 a.m.
In a statement released on December 16, the DCI confirmed that the bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, is under investigation as detectives seek to establish the exact cause of the fatal collision.
What Investigators Have Established So Far
Preliminary findings show that Jirongo was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number KCZ 305U, when it collided head-on with a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration KCU 576A, owned by Climax Company Ltd.
The impact of the crash was severe. Police say Jirongo’s vehicle was pushed about 25 meters from the point of collision, while the bus came to a stop roughly 50 meters away.
Following the accident, homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory were dispatched to the scene. The team examined the road, collected evidence, and documented damage to both vehicles.
CCTV Footage Raises Key Questions
One of the most critical pieces of evidence comes from CCTV footage obtained from Eagle Petrol Station, located near the crash site.
According to the DCI, the footage shows Jirongo arriving at the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. He did not refuel and left the station moments later. At 2:19:10 a.m., he exited the station and made a right turn towards Nairobi.
Just seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the bus was captured on camera ramming into Jirongo’s vehicle.
Investigators believe the CCTV footage will play a major role in reconstructing the final moments before the crash.
Bus Driver Released on Cash Bail
The bus driver had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. After further questioning, he was released on cash bail as investigations continue.
The DCI confirmed that Githinji will be required to report back to the traffic base on December 22, 2025, as police determine whether charges related to dangerous driving will be filed.
Jirongo’s Final Movements
Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements before the accident. Police are recording statements from people who interacted with him on the night of December 12, including individuals who were present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
