Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has issued a stern warning to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, advising him to rethink his 2027 presidential ambitions and avoid the pitfalls of tribal politics.
Speaking candidly about the political future of his party leader, Muthama expressed concern that Kalonzo’s current approach to the next election could be a recipe for failure.
“Kushinda Ruto mpaka mtafute mbinu mpya,” Muthama stated, referring to the need for Kalonzo to adopt new strategies if he hopes to compete with President William Ruto in 2027.
He pointed out the futility of relying solely on regional voting blocs, particularly the Kikuyu and Kamba communities, to secure the presidency.
"Ni mjinga mgani atapigia Kalonzo kura kama anajua Gachagua atachukua viti zote na watu wake?" Muthama quipped, emphasizing that focusing on tribal support is no longer a winning formula in modern Kenyan politics.
Muthama further urged Kalonzo to move beyond the traditional thinking that the Kikuyu vote or the Kamba vote would automatically translate into a presidential win.
"Ombeeni Kalonzo abadilike fikra, ajue sio kura ya Wakikuyu itamfanya president, ama kura ya Wakamba," he said, urging the Wiper leader to think beyond his ethnic base.
According to Muthama, true political leadership requires a broad, national appeal — not just a stronghold in a particular region.
In his passionate address, Muthama stressed that Kalonzo’s presidential dreams could only come to fruition if he garnered support from across the country.
"Atakuwa president akipigiwa kura na Wakenya," he concluded, asserting that only a nationwide appeal could elevate Kalonzo to the presidency.
Muthama’s warning comes at a critical time in Kenyan politics as the 2027 election approaches, with leaders like Kalonzo being urged to break away from the tribal politics that have long defined Kenya’s electoral landscape.
